About Stoke-on-Trent

The city of Stoke-on-Trent is situated in England’s West Midlands region in the county of Staffordshire. With a population of around 240,000, Stoke-on-Trent is conveniently located halfway between the cities of Manchester and Birmingham. The city of Stoke-on-Trent was created in 1910, with a federation of the old, originally separate ‘Six Towns’; namely Hanley, Stoke, Longton, Burslem, Tunstall and Fenton, more commonly referred to as ‘The Potteries.’ The result of this federation is a 12-miles-long, linear conurbation covering a total area of 36 square miles. Stoke-on-Trent is often referred to as ‘The Ceramics Capital of the World,’ and is the home of England’s pottery industry.

A brief history of Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke-on-Trent has a rich and significant pottery-making and ceramics heritage, hence the nickname ‘The Potteries.’ Because of its rich supply of clay and coal, pottery production in Stoke-on-Trent dates as far back as the 17th century. But it was the industrialization of pottery production that truly put Stoke-on-Trent on the map and the area became well renowned for its earthenware and stoneware. Famous 18th-century Staffordshire potters, Josiah Wedgwood, Joseph Spode, Thomas Whieldon and Thomas Minton helped solidify Stoke-on-Trent’s reputation as the world’s ceramics capital with their tremendous contributions. Stoke-on-Trent has six award-winning pottery museums, all of which superbly reflect Stoke-on-Trent’s rich pottery heritage. Modern-day Stoke-on-Trent

Even though Stoke-on-Trent’s pottery industry is currently undergoing decline because of cheaper foreign substitutes, modern-day Stoke-on-Trent is still considered the world’s ceramics capital, being the world’s largest producer of clay-ware. Many leading pottery manufacturers are located in Stoke-on-Trent, including Royal Doulton, Spode, Wedgwood and Moorcroft. “The city is dotted with many factory shops offering great bargains, like the recently developed ‘Potteries Shopping Centre in Hanley,” says Vernon Pethard, Managing Director of www.newhomesforsale.co.uk, the UK's leading new homes property website.
